The 'Cosmic Picnic'

Sir Paul Smith has been following a chronology of styles as of late in his collections, continuing with his Sping 2009 Paul Smith Collection. This collection entitled 'Cosmic Picnic' looked towards the acidheads of the past, respectable and smart men with a psychedelic riot running loose under the surface. For this reason the collection began with the smart tailoring, following Smith's much loved style, yet as the show progressed it became more laid back. His inspiration also lead to the use of dramatic make up and somewhat tousled hair in order to give that effect of a tripped-out business man. The three piece suits were mainly striped, a key trend for Spring 2009 menswear, visually slimming and lengthening the models adding to the effect of their strained condition. Casual elements were abundant even in the smartest tailoring with rolled up trousers and tied cord belts.

The actual casual wear had a deconstructed silhouette with large and draping designs, that were light rather than heavy and overpowering. The light colours also added a less melancholy feel to the collection, which begun with such dark and somewhat imposing looks. Personally speaking I find Paul Smith in general to have delightful menswear, catering specifically for tall and lean men, which is unfortunately still quite a niche market. The tailoring tends to be traditional but with a quirky individuality, usually found in the interesting detailing.
