Study Space

J House (Bien Hoa, Vietnam)

Designed by CTA Creative Architects

I have recently been spending most of my evenings sat at my desk, studying by lamp light while wearing noise cancelling headphones to get into the zone (I am officially a “mature” student). I saw photographs of this house in Vietnam, designed by CTA Creative Architects, and was absolutely smitten. My immediate thought was - this is a space I would love to study in. The play of light and shadow, the warmth of the dark woods, the abundance of plant life, all that textured glass, not to mention the fact that the property has a classroom built into it(!), combines to make it feel like a dream space in which to sit and work.

The property was designed for a teacher who had a narrow townhouse plot measuring only 4x24 metres. She wanted a space in which she could keep her plants and that would be bright and airy - a tough call for a traditional build in a plot that size. The focus of the architects was fourfold: lots of greenspace, lots of natural light, natural ventilation to fight the heat, and decent noise reduction given the location.

Each space had to be exposed to greenery and natural light, ensuring enough light for daily activities and plants to grow comfortably. And to be honest, greenery and sunlight sounds like something we could all use more of for our daily well-being. Solar glass was used in the skylights to reduce heat transfer by around 40-45%, while the last image posted shows stones scattered across the glass to provide dappled shade simulating light falling through leaves. Overall I love the use of light and shadow throughout this home, and can only imagine how beautiful it must be in person.

I hope to have a home as charming and inviting as this one day.
