Insights on Fashion Journalism
I am immensely grateful to announce that I was asked to contribute to a book reflecting on fashion journalism, edited by Rosie Findlay and Johannes Reponen, on the topic of menswear blogging. It feels a bit strange to review a book I contributed to, so I would rather let you read it for yourself if you are interested. I actually had not read any of the other contributions until I got my own copy of the book, and having read it cover to cover, I have to say it is a truly fascinating read (and pretty surreal to see my own writing in there). I genuinely recommend it to all those interested in fashion journalism and fashion media - for those specifically interested in fashion blogging, I would recommend checking out Findlay’s book Personal Style Blogs (Intellect Books, 2017) too.
It was an interesting experience to reflect on the landscape of menswear blogging, and it made me realise how much I actually miss reading blogs. I am forever wondering what the future of fashion journalism and fashion discourse will look like, and how various online platforms frame our experience of fashion, so hopefully I am still around in another decade or so to talk about it.
Congratulations to Rosie and Johannes, and all those who contributed, on the fantastic book!
This collection surveys the key debates and issues that currently face fashion journalism, going beyond traditional print media to consider its multiple contexts and iterations in an ever-evolving post-digital media environment. The book is organized into three sections, mapping fashion journalism’s established and emerging practices and exploring its parameters from mainstream to marginal. Approaching fashion journalism through a critically diverse lens, this collection is an asset for academics and students in the fields of fashion studies, journalism, communication, cultural studies and digital media.
