Seeing Red

Real (cheap) men cut their hair at home.

Just a bit of colour blocking from the end of last week. I thought it would lead on nicely from thinking about outfit basics and keeping things simple but effective. The raglan sweater is actually a soft red cotton velour (it has to be stroked up to feel smooth, not down, which always confuses me for some reason). Although perhaps a retro fabric, I have always liked the way velour plays against light and the tactility of it. Clothing is after all about sensory experiences for the wearer, so it is always fun to wear such a material.

I paired the sweater with slightly faded skinny jeans, which I pegged and cuffed. I keep seeing kids around South London pegging baggy jeans in order to better display their newest kicks (usually a pair of fresh out of the box Nike Air Max 1's or Air Max 90's), however I have to admit that I do not think it really works proportionally. Unless of course the wearer is looking for the MC Hammer effect - but then again I think a pair of drop-crotch trousers or carrot leg jeans would perhaps serve those purposes better. I think the taper is otherwise too abrupt and does not provide the nicest silhouette, as a simple cuff or stack with a pair of such baggy jeans would give when breaking on that type of footwear.

Anyhow, I went with a pair of skinny jeans, although I prefer to call them fitted, because skinny always makes me think of skin tight jeans. I finished off with a pair of red socks to play off the sweater and a simple pair of navy Vans. Overall perhaps a plain outfit, but I think the basics were there for a little subtle play.
