My interest in the concept of the contemporary Gothic has been one that has slowly grown into the realm fascination over the past several months. The dark and romantic looks have stood in rather stark contrast to my usual manner, yet they have an undeniable allure. I have found myself decidedly wearing more black and darker colours at times where I may have otherwise worn bright pops of colour. Adding even the smallest of variety really does allow one to explore both one's self and one's style.
As I was looking over a some past editorials, I came across the above pictured Gothic Luxury shoot. I found myself appreciating both the artistic direction of the shoot, yet more importantly, the fashions depicted therein. With the absence of any real colour in the clothing, with strong black garments against the inherent fragility of nude skin, it truly allows shape and line to be the dominant focus. Just as in black and white photography, where the lack of colour allows one to truly focus on the play of light; the lack of colour in these garments allows one to truly appreciate the line and cut of the pieces.
Indeed it seems that to take the direction of a monochromatic collection, requires a certain amount of skill and confidence in design. I found myself particularly thinking back to Ann Demeulemeester's Fall 09 collection for her eponymous label, and Takahiro Miyashita's Fall 07 collection for Number (N)ine. The effortless layering and draping of these dark and romantic looks certainly do seem to appeal for the colder months. Besides, who doesn't feel like wearing full black every once in a while?

P.S. I am considering giving the blog a little bit of a spruce up. Would you like to see a wider format?
