Everyday Yohji

"Yes, I may be making fashion in the sense of craftmanship, but I hate the world of fashion"

Yohji Yamamoto is undeniably one of the most thought provoking designers in respects to both his pieces and philosophical approach to fashion. With his unwavering aesthetic of billowing darker fabrics and an attention to the very lifestyle and thought processes of the Yamamoto Man, he creates not only clothing but also a living concept with his designs. One does not simply purchase a single Yohji Yamamoto garment, rather one buys into being able to express a philosophy in life.

Fit is something with which most designers make their name, yet for Yamamoto, it is not the most important factor in design. He is attracted by the flaws and indeed as a designer who finds it normal to have men of all different sizes and ages on the runway, his take on fashion is rare in the least. For your average man however, the fit of Yamamoto's namesake line, may often be a tad too adventurous despite its beautiful appeal.

As such when Coming Soon, the more casual, sportswear side of Yohji Yamamoto, was first announced, it introduced the idea of a more accessible side to Yamamoto's philosophy on fashion. The images above are of the first Spring '09 collection, and to say I am impressed would be understating it.

Whilst some may view the clothing as being nothing new, I would be inclined to disagree. They manage to capture in their essence the everyday side to the Yamamoto Man. They are far more affordable and any singular piece would make an easy addition into one's wardrobe. The attention to detail and Yamamoto's inherent belief in freedom are clearly seen in the collection, and the fact that the silhouettes have been greatly trimmed down, give them an impact without being overpowering.

Now if one would be so kind as to direct me to the closest Coming Soon retailer...
