Living Patterns

(Florence Broadhurst)

(Art work by Emma Hack)

Award winning artist and skin illustrator, Emma Hack, started her career in make up and face painting. Her creativity however was to lead to greater things, and her latest collection took inspiration from the wonderful prints of the late Florence Broadhurst.

Tragically murdered in her own studio, Australian artist and designer, Florence Broadhurst was renowned for her exquisitely designed wallpapers. Her colourful, geometric and naturally inspired pieces were instantly recognisable due to their sheer detail and beauty. Mesmerised by her collection of prints, Emma Hack decided to use some of Broadhurst's most recognisable pieces in her own photography and body art work. Using live models to 'play' against the character and charm of each print, she decided to painstakingly hand paint each design in order to create living illusionary art. For me, the beauty of each print and its retracing onto skin is simply astounding. The idea of patterns lifted from the fragile paper and placed on equally fragile bare skin is a beautiful one.
