Solve Sundsbo At Colette

"If I've got style, it's that I've got no style"

The world famous London based Norwegian photographer, Solve Sundsbo is currently having an exhibition at Colette's gallery in France. His reputation alone is likely to draw huge crowds. He began as an assistant to Nick Knight, undoubtedly one of the greatest visionary fashion photographers. After establishing himself as a photographer he worked with the likes of Gucci, Dior, Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermes, Nike, Lancome and Mac Cosmetics to scratch the surface of his profile. Many of you will most likely recognise the name as he is a regular contributor to a number of magazines such as Pop, ID, Dazed, Confused and Vogue Nippon.

His work is always wonderfully creative and highly inspiring and I personally love how he always manages to capture the raw beauty and essence of his subjects. Indeed Tom Ford stated that "Solve is a great talent in the fashion industry. His photographs speak for themselves. They are powerful, beautiful, always fresh, and I am lucky to have worked with him over the past decade." Strangely enough, at first Sundsbo found it hard to find work, lacking in many eyes a 'style and language' of his own. This was down to the fact that he was so experimental as a photographer, embracing a multitude of styles and working with range of varied techniques.

What I love about his photography is that although many viewers believe the techniques and finishes he employs to be modern and new age, many of the processes are actually based in traditional photography. I also find his approach to fashion photography as highly refreshing, he believes that "photography has become democratic – anyone with a digital camera can shoot something and alter it in Photoshop to make it look polished. For the past four or five years there's been a lot of dull, perfected work around, but there's an industry backlash going on now."

Bring on the backlash...
